Short answer: Yes. After a roof replacement in Florida, get a new wind mitigation inspection, send it with your roof permit to your insurer, and re-shop the policy. Roof age and condition are major underwriting factors, so a new roof can open carriers that wouldn't quote you before, and Florida law requires insurers to offer credits for documented wind-resistant features. A new roof also can't be credited until a new inspection form documents features like deck nailing and secondary water resistance. Nymble Insurance is a licensed Florida independent agency that compares multiple carriers. Call (813) 291-3484 or start a quote online.
Why a new roof changes your insurance
Florida carriers price and accept homes largely on wind risk, and the roof is the first line of defense. Many set roof-age limits by material, and an old roof is one of the most common reasons for a non-renewal. Once your roof is new, two things happen:
- More carriers will quote you. Homes that only qualified for a limited market may now qualify for others.
- New wind credits may apply. Section 627.0629 of the Florida Statutes requires insurers to offer discounts or credits for wind-resistant construction. A re-roof often adds features such as improved roof deck attachment and secondary water resistance, and sometimes better roof-to-wall connections.
Neither happens automatically. Your current insurer doesn't know what was installed until you document it.
Step 1: collect the roof paperwork
- Final permit inspection from your city or county building department
- Contractor invoice showing the material, install date and scope
- Product approval number for the roof covering
- Any FORTIFIED Roof certificate, if your roof was built to that standard
Step 2: get a new wind mitigation inspection
Florida's revised wind mitigation form (OIR-B1-1802, Rev. 04/26) has been required for inspections since April 1, 2026, and it asks for proof of each feature. A report done before the re-roof understates your home. Schedule a new one once the final inspection passes. See our guide to wind mitigation inspections.

Sending the new report to your current carrier is worth doing, but it only tells you what one company will do. An independent agency can show you whether other carriers now offer better coverage or price. When comparing, check:
- Roof settlement. Replacement cost or actual cash value for roof claims
- Hurricane deductible. 2%, 5% or 10% of the dwelling limit, or $500 where offered
- Dwelling limit. Make sure it reflects today's rebuilding cost
- Water damage and law and ordinance coverage
Step 4: switch cleanly
- Bind the new policy before you cancel the old one, with the same start and end date.
- Send proof of insurance and the mortgagee clause to your lender.
- Any unearned premium on the cancelled policy is refunded under its terms.

Frequently asked questions
Will a new roof lower my home insurance in Florida?
It often helps, because roof age and wind features drive Florida pricing, but the result depends on the carrier, your county and the rest of the home. Re-shopping shows you the real options.
Do I need a new wind mitigation inspection after a new roof?
Yes. New features are only credited once a new form documents them.
What documents prove my new roof to an insurer?
The final permit inspection, contractor invoice, product approval number and a new wind mitigation report.
Can I switch insurers in the middle of my policy term?
Yes. Bind the new policy first, then cancel the old one. Unearned premium is refunded under the policy's terms.
Does Nymble charge to re-shop my policy?
No. We're an independent agency and compare multiple carriers for you.
